Спортивные новости на английском.

Russians like to live life in the fast lane, but now at least one of them is about to move up a gear and join the exclusive world of Formula One racing.

This year will see the first Russian driver, Vitaly Petrov, competing in the Formula One Grand Prix championship. Petrov will join Robert Kubitsa at Renault after getting the nod from the team’s new boss Eric Boullier.

The 25-year-old has been steadily rising through the racing ranks over the past decade winning three domestic titles from 2002. He then moved up to the GP2, class finishing runner-up in that series last year.

His dream of competing on the elite circuit was realized after he received $20 million from Russian sponsors, including gas giant Gazprom.

“The GP2 series was a big challenge for me because I didn’t have the proper driving and career management experience. Once I cranked up a gear, people started taking notice,” Petrov told us.

“I’m very happy because we’ve come a long way to get here and now we have the ultimate opportunity to show what we can do,” he added.

Vitaly Petrov, the first Russian driver in Formula 1, has taken to the wheel of his Renault for the first time at a test session at the Cheste circuit in Valencia, Spain.

Seven drivers, including home favorite Fernando Alonso, who was trying out his Ferrari for the first time, and returning legend Michael Schumacher all took part in the test session in front of 30,000 fans.

Petrov, 25, took sixth place after completing his fastest lap in 1:13.097, which is nearly two seconds slower than the result of winner Alonso (1:11.470).

Pedro De la Rosa, representing BMW Sauber, lost to his Spanish countryman by less than half a second (1:12,094), while Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher was third fastest, with the result of 1:12.438.

The new Formula 1 season is set to kick off on March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix.
